BICYCLE TOUR OF EUROPE IN SUPPORT OF NEW RECORD BLUES FILTER THROUGH
(SEATTLE, USA – 2009) Americana/folk songwriter Moe Provencher’s brand-new record Blues Filter Through is a collection of tunes that sink in more deeply with each listen. Even with songs touching on mournful and heartbroken themes, there’s a shiny glimmer within the storytelling. Provencher’s soulful, organic alto evokes a sense of time and place well-rooted in the genre’s traditions, but also with a punch of modern consciousness.
Blues Filter Through captures this spirit as well, and it seems fitting that it was recorded live over two evenings with minimal overdubs. With catchy hooks and rollicking phrases mixed in with the bluesy feel of slower numbers, Provencher tackles subjects of the heart and the head with equal intensity. “Time won’t crawl back on his knees to your door, he just rolls up his sleeves,” she sings on Kicks & Spit. This seems to encapsulate the entire project and her approach to all aspects of her music career...hand-packaging each CD, using recycled cardboard CD cases, a letter-pressed cover, screen-printed back cover, and unique, self-produced liner notes.
When it comes to touring, she travels primarily by bus, train, bicycle and foot. She and drummer Aimee Zoe Tubbs will embark on their first European tour via bicycle this summer, making appearances at festivals and venues in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Holland and Germany. What seems unconventional these days is only a stone’s throw into the past, when folks strapped their instruments on their backs and got around just fine without the combustible engine.
Provencher has garnered accolades with her previous project, Pelusa, whose two albums received wide acclaim nationally and in Europe, as well as her 2007 solo EP, 2+2. However, it’s Blues Filter Through that brings out a more profound connection between Provencher and listener.
